This one got me....he pretended to be Colonel Paul Wood in US military due to retire to the UK. He left it about two weeks before declaring he loved me...then got more frequent with emails..said on his last assignment in afghanistan he would be doing something dangerous and made up a story about doing something heroic for a woman he was met whilst there helping donate goods to an orphanage in dangerous territory on his final mission. Still couldnt provide a retirement date though, and also, what he said about sending the thing home and not secure enough at US camp site didnt ring true.....alarm bells rang loudly then. He said he wanted to send it to me....but hiccup...his trusted friend would be bringing it as he couldnt leave yet and he would email me to let me know when he arrived in the UK. The friend then subsequently emailed me message and picture of himself so I would know it was him when he came......(yes, getting more far fetched by the minute) he was bringing it to me (yes I stupidly gave my address..) but then that got changed to me meeting him at Heathrow Airport, even though I had said I couldnt get there.....he kept ignoring that bit. Then he hit me with it, his friend got caught in transit at Ghana airport and sent a customs document wanting £1700 when I explained I could not do that as I dont have any money to give, I even explained financial problems and that maximum credit allowed is £500...lo and behold, his friend managed to get £1200 from his wife but not the last bit and was stuck in Ghana lodging in a guest house (how? When he had no money...)and customs had the package, he couldnt leave until duty was paid. He begged for £500 to free his friend to enable him to go to his family. I didnt have that either, so then he begged me to give him half my wage and he would pay it back with interest. Luckily (if having no money is lucky!!) I just didnt have it, and neither did my family and friends (who he also asked me to ask for the money so I could send it to release his friend back to his family), so I havent parted with anything except a few home details which werent completely true as I had suspicions as soon as he asked for money.....well I had suspicions before that and kept checking things out he said, I had done some research on the name, but not got anywhere, just some facts he gave me had tied up, but he probably got them on the internet like I did anyway. He was very good. obviously been doing it a while, so I guess stories must get more plausible each time. As I was new to the dating website...he got me more or less straight away aftrer logging on to it and took me away from the site to correspond by email. He wasnt interested in IM as he was too busy for that I suppose. Lesson learned the hard way.

Chat with me

One of the first things a scammer will do is to try and get you away from the site to chat with them on instant messenger. Scammers try to work very fast in most cases and IM is much faster than conversating through emails and web site messages.

Read my profile

Another reason scammers want to get you away from the site is to keep you from seeing any warnings that may be posted on the profiles. Check profiles very carefully and pay attention to how they are written as opposed to how they talk on instant messanger.

Search for me

Many times, when someone you meet gives you their email address, you can find them on other sites by doing a search on your favorite search engine site. They could already be listed on a few scammer awareness sites like this one.
